Poster Design for the University of Illinois Art History Symposium

2019

In the Fall of 2019, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Art History Department reached out to me to work with them in designing the artwork which would represent their annual symposium. The symposium was sponsored in part by the Society for Art History and Archeology, School of Art + Design Visitors Committee, Modern Art Colloquium, European Union Center, Society of Art Historians, and the Student Organization Resource Fund. Rather than confining the symposium to a historical era, it was defined by questions such as n what cases and for whom are the politics of narrative and counternarrative emancipatory (and/or oppressive)? How do narrative and performative fictions intervene in politics, disrupting and/or maintaining the status quo? How have artists, activists, and scholars tactically used “fictions” and “narratives” to create interventions? Following Rancière, how can we distinguish between fiction and falsity? Do fictions still have power to challenge us to imagine and enact alternative possibilities and experiences? What other modes might enable such alternatives?
